Building Better Data Systems for Better Decisions LIMITED
Thursday January 23, 2025 11:00am - 11:50am EST
Better decisions require better information. This guiding principle lies at the heart of the Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) Grant Program, which has helped fuel the successful design, development, and expansion of K-12 and P-20W (early learning through the workforce) data systems across the nation. These systems empower states to manage, analyze, and use education data—particularly individual student records—to drive data-informed decision-making, improve student outcomes, and facilitate research aimed at closing achievement gaps. However, as data systems have matured over the past decade, new challenges have emerged, particularly in meeting the evolving needs of education agencies and stakeholders. In this session, we will explore the ongoing evolution of the K12 Student Longitudinal Data System (SLDS), a cornerstone of the state’s educational data infrastructure. Specifically, we’ll focus on the challenges of modernizing the NC SchoolWorks system, which, despite being a heavily relied-upon resource, is struggling to keep up with changes in state agencies, Public School Units (PSUs), and data needs.  All these systems have a “piece of the puzzle,” but there is no single platform where our data exists, and no singular source of truth for student data – data exists in different forms in each system. We are seeking feedback from North Carolina school leaders and education stakeholders as we transition to a unified, integrated data system.  We want to hear from you—the individuals who are working directly with these data sources, generating reports, and using the insights to inform decisions at the local level every day.In this session, attendees will learn about:The current state of North Carolina’s data systems, including the fragmentation challenges and the impact on data accessibility and decision-making.The phased approach to modernizing NC SchoolWorks, including migrating to the cloud, enriching the data lake, and transitioning to a new reporting and analytic platform. The vision for a unified, integrated data system that can provide a single, comprehensive source of student data to drive actionable insights, improve student outcomes, and close achievement gaps.

Attendees will be introduced to a classroom setting that allows students to grow and thrive in a way that encourages them to use their strengths to apply their learning. Gamification begins with the terminology, theming your classroom and decorating. I will share how my class takes on a medieval theme as the students enter the castle of a king and work their way up the social hierarchy of the Middle Ages. We will also look at ways that you could theme your classroom in other subjects. Adventurers who join will go on Quests, complete Challenges, & Boss Battles all while leveling up as if they were playing a Role Playing Game. Quests consist of choices to create and apply their learning in a variety of ways such as decorating phone cases and Stanley cups, creating Newspapers, Magazine Covers, Social Media Pages and many more activities to choose from. They do these activities with things relevant to the content they are learning in a digital format. Participants will walk through a week in the classroom and be active participants in the session. They will have an opportunity to explore digital tools like ChatGPT and Brisk teaching to help enhance any lesson and create products that they can take back to their classroom to use. Participants will walk away with a packet of resources to implement in their own learning spaces.

AIding Impact: Leading AI Literacy Integration in a School District LIMITED
Thursday January 23, 2025 12:00pm - 12:50pm EST
Join us for an exciting look at the first year of our district's AI literacy integration in Chatham County Schools! This presentation will explore how we're empowering both educators and students to navigate the future of generative AI with confidence and responsibility. With the support of the prestigious NCDPI Impact Grant, we’re on a path to create a digitally savvy community that understands how AI can drive positive change. By 2027, we aim to equip our schools with the tools and knowledge to harness AI in transformative ways, and we want YOU to be a part of that process! Our year one goal is to provide educators with practical tools and guidance for integrating generative AI into classrooms. This will include an AI pedagogies document and opportunities for professional development, such as our DISC (Digital Innovation Steampunk Camp) annual district-wide conference and partnership with Magic School Enterprise, along with ongoing communications and training throughout the year.  Our goals for years two and three include collecting educator feedback on AI’s role in education and how they use it, in order to refine program efficacy. This data will be used to improve professional development initiatives, including DISC, which will be held in person for the first time post-pandemic in 2025. This year’s theme, “Innovation is in the AIr,” will focus on culturally responsive and ethical AI tools for various instructional specializations, with future DISCs incorporating evolving AI topics. Through DISC and related AI training, we aim to reduce concerns surrounding plagiarism and copyright infringement. As educator proficiency improves, student and family proficiency will also rise, supporting positive outcomes in instruction. Simultaneously, we anticipate analyzing student data on AI usage to inform instructional planning and identify trends from 2024 to 2027, ensuring our AI strategies meet diverse student needs. By implementing safe AI-based accessibility features aligned with ISTE standards and NCDPI guidelines, we plan to accommodate all learners by 2027. The program’s success will result in a local population well-equipped to engage with AI responsibly, improving digital citizenship and driving positive community impacts.

Scaffolding the Use of Tech Tools to Limiting Learning Barriers LIMITED
Thursday January 23, 2025 3:00pm - 3:50pm EST
In this session, we will discuss how scaffolding the use of a digital tool like Canva can benefit students in terms of products created and enhance learning experiences in the classroom. We would all agree that the more we use a tool, the more comfortable we are with it, and the better the products we produce. Do we approach student products the same way? This session will provide practical strategies and examples to effectively integrate Canva into your teaching practice and easy ways to connect activities, building on the understanding of Canva as a tool leading to a higher level of creativity, more in-depth projects, and ultimately better products, refocusing on the learning and not the challenge of learning a new tool all the time.Participants will discuss how we scaffold learning content and how we apply this concept to tools in the classroom or if we even do. Then, we will walk through a sample yearly curriculum showcasing ways Canva could be tactfully applied and how the scaffolding concept would work. Lastly, participants will get a chance to share ways they have used Canva in the classroom and if they used the scaffolding concept or if scaffolding the use of the tool would have changed student outcomes.

Thursday January 23, 2025 3:00pm - 3:50pm EST
Are group projects getting you down? Do you pair learners in small teams only to hear crickets? Does it seem like only one person is doing all the work in project groups? Then join this session to learn how you can set students up for successful collaboration and beat the group work blues! We’ll kick off this session with a discussion of some of the most common challenges we face with group projects in the classroom: lack of student communication skills, bossy student leaders, and disengaged group members. Participants will then experience collaborative learning strategies that help overcome these challenges in a new way and experiment with tools like a Team Charter template from LucidSpark for starting teamwork off on the right foot and quick and effective check-in strategies in Padlet or ensuring all team members are on the same page. These strategies transcend one-and-done group projects to develop transferable skills for the world beyond our classrooms. Educators who attend this session will walk away with templates to use in their class tomorrow along with actionable tips for beating the group work blues and setting the tone for the school year.
